John Field – Emeritus ProfessorJohn Field

Dr. Field retired in 2005 after 37 years with the ECE Department. During that time he was Chair of the Department for 12 years and served as Interim Dean of the College of Engineering for one year. He helped establish the Department’s co-op program, its first Visiting Committee, its Ph.D. program, and its undergraduate Computer Engineering program. He also initiated a number of courses, particularly in the area of microcomputers and their applications. For a number of years he was co-director of a Young Scholars Program whose purpose was to encourage high school students to consider engineering as a career.

He was named the first Henry R. & Grace V. Butler Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Henry Butler was a distinguished alumnus who, along with his family, wanted to give back to the ECE Department. Dr. Field considered it an honor to hold the Butler Professorship and to work with the Butler family in carrying out the goals of the Professorship.

Dr. Field would like to thank everyone who helped him during his career at UMaine. He particularly wants to thank the students who made all the hard work worthwhile.
